Seeds that 100% germinate

We’ve had some disappointment with seed in the past, and also expensive turf. We’ve moved from the country where the soil is rich, to the Central Coast where we basically have sand

Our new turf over two years has all but died off, and the seed that I purchased since has so much other stuff in it, basically looks like weeds - very disappointing.

Enter McKay seeds. I did a quick search online and found McKay seeds rated highly.

I am familiar with the robustness of Kikuyu, and how it bounces back after drought, so I thought I’d give it a go.

Straight out of the packet, after I had scattered a few handfuls of seed on the bare ground (some topsoil there) and kept it watered over the last two weeks in March and April, it responded.

It appears every seed has germinated immediately, and is sprouting and growing well.

I’m really impressed. This is clearly why McKay seeds get 5 out of 5 stars.

I’m hoping I get more success in drier months than I did from my Sir Walter Buffalo turf - that cost me a motza to put down two years ago - or the combo seed options from the big hardware stores.

Will update again post Winter and Spring 2025.

i put the seed out today hopefully it grows ok its hard to give a review until it happends

I was not happy with the result

I purchased a bag of 2kg of this blend for my garden, an area under 40sqm and I spread the seeds in May 2024. Initially, the Raygrass grew quickly and covered all the ground as expected. In mid spring Kikuyu seeds started to pop out and Raygrass stared to die. but the problem was that Kikuyu grass was too rare here and there. Now after 10 months and having passed most if the warm season in NSW, the area is still patchy and about halfoif the area is soil exposed. I followed all the instructions from the first stem and I think the percentage of Kikuyu seeds in this blend is not enough.

Better than Bunnings Seeds

I'm in Tasmanian and in the process of repairing a large neglected lawn. My observation with seed from Bunnings was that, regardless of what's on the box, it's almost all perenial ryegrass, and the quality of lots varies ie with identical soil preparation and watering germination rates varied widely.

Once this ryegrass had germinated two facts were apparent - ryegrass is not very drought tolerant and its ligher green color is not a good match with the existing grass which is (now I know more) a mix of Kentucky Blue Grass and Tall Fescue,

McKays Parks Blend to the rescue.

Using a 4 day pre-germination (seeds in bag in a bucket of water, with water changed every 12 hours) the sow mixed with some fertilizer, loam and coarse sand, the first sprouts appeared within a week and with a very even distribution.

Delivery was quick too.

A Great Grass for the Right Location

First of all the process of ordering and delivery are first rate and the quality of the seeds excellent.

I followed their planting instructions and the grass came up without any drama. Just keep it damp during the germination period.
The grass looks excellent. It is a fine leave turf and I would not recommend it for areas that take a lot of wear. But if you want a show case lawn that requires a lot less maintenance than dedicated show lawns like bent grasses, this is the go. All my neighbours love to walk through the creeping red fescue in their near feet.
