Kentucky Bluegrass seed
McKay’s Kentucky Bluegrass is an exceptionally hardy and attractive lawn with excellent repair capabilities. Ideal for cool climates, it thrives in areas with mild to warm summers and cold winters, such as Victoria and Tasmania.
This cool-season bunch grass features unique rhizomes, allowing it to spread and thicken, providing moderate repair capabilities. Unlike more aggressive runner grasses like Couch or Kikuyu, Kentucky Bluegrass spreads gently, making it suitable for greener backyards with low garden beds.
Well-suited for companion planting with other grass types like Fescues and Ryegrass, this lawn boasts medium-sized blades that form a thick, soft sod. It is perfect for frost-prone areas in Australia as it maintains its color and remains active during winter.
Seeding Rates
- New Lawns: 17-20 grams per square meter (2kg/100m2).
- Overseeding: 8-10 grams per square meter (1kg/100m2).

Detailed Description
Kentucky Bluegrass is renowned for its lush, deep green appearance and fine texture, making it an attractive choice for lawns and landscapes. The best time for its growth is during cool periods, moist weather on well-drained, fertile soils with a pH between 6 and 7. Known for its ability to form a dense, carpet-like turf, it’s ideal for both residential and commercial settings where a premium lawn finish is desired. Its resilience and adaptability to different climates make it a preferred choice in temperate regions across Australia.
Sowing Tips
Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure best coverage and avoid seed wastage, we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. Soil must remain damp throughout the germination period and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing through irrigation or natural rainfall. Adequate water supplies need to be maintained until the grass is fully established.
Optimal Planting Time
The optimum temperature for Kentucky Bluegrass is in the range of 15ºC to 28ºC.
Germination
Approximately 14 days (climate dependent). Due to the slower growth of Kentucky Bluegrass, full establishment can take 1-2 months. However, once established, it spreads quickly via its extensive rhizome production.
Kentucky Bluegrass grows by roots from single plants and simultaneously sends out stems to form their own roots, making the base denser as it grows.
Water
Kentucky Bluegrass loves water and will need a good, reliable water supply to ensure optimal performance. It has higher water requirements than many other grasses. Watering should be deep and less frequent to encourage the roots to deepen in search of moisture. This will produce a more drought-tolerant and disease-resistant turf.
Despite this, Kentucky Bluegrass can be an extremely drought-tolerant turf. The grass will begin to brown, die off, and look sickly without adequate water but can stay alive in its depleted state very well (once fully established). If drought is affecting your Kentucky Bluegrass lawn, watering when possible is recommended, and the lawn may still come back to life once water conditions improve.
Fertilising
Careful attention will need to be paid to fertilise the new lawn frequently during its first year; 3-4 times is recommended in the growing season. Fertilisers with a higher Nitrogen content are recommended. Yellowing areas of grass may indicate that the soil is highly alkaline; fertilisers with additional Iron may assist in this instance.
First Mowing
Lawn mowing heights will need to be kept much higher than most other grasses for residential use. Mowing height for Kentucky Bluegrass is 18 – 25 mm on lawns/sports fields.
Mowing Frequency
During its peak cool season environment, lawn mowing will need to be carried out around once a week to ensure the lawn doesn’t suffer from having too much green leaf removed in a single mowing.
Disadvantages of Kentucky Bluegrass
- At temperatures greater than 30ºC and in freezing temperatures, it will go into dormancy but will recover when the preferred temperature returns.
- Any areas of turf that are becoming worn out or sparse should be re-seeded whenever necessary.
