The Budget Blend is a versatile and economical choice, combining various grass seeds from the McKays product line. Each batch may vary in composition, offering a diverse range of grasses suitable for multiple environments and uses. This blend provides a practical solution for contractors, builders, and landscapers looking for a reliable grass seed option.

How Much Grass Seed per m²?

For optimal results, sow 25 to 30 grams of grass seed per square metre. This rate ensures dense, even coverage without overcrowding seedlings. Heavier sowing may slow establishment, while lighter application can lead to patchy areas that require reseeding.

Sowing Tips

Sow into soft topsoil or sandy loam. Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure the best coverage and avoid seed wastage, we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. The soil must remain damp throughout the germination period and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing through irrigation or natural rainfall. Adequate water supplies need to be maintained until the grass is fully established.

Autumn and Early Spring are the best times to sow this seed.

Germination

14-21 days, climate and condition dependent.

Water

Keep moist throughout the entire germination period until the roots are well established. Requires additional watering during Summer and unseasonally high temperatures to ensure the roots do not die off.

Fertilising

McKays Slow Release Fertiliser is not included in this blend. An additional application is recommended approximately 6 weeks after sowing during the active growth phase.

First Mowing

When grass is between 5-7cm tall. This should indicate that the roots are strong enough to withstand the mowing process.

Mowing Frequency

Mowing requirements will increase during the active growth phase. This may mean mowing is required 1-2 times/week depending on the desired height of the grass.

Disadvantages of Budget Blend

• Requires more water than warm climate grasses in summer and unseasonally hot days.
• May need occasional overseeding to maintain a thick and luscious lawn.
