Princess 77 Couch Seed
Princess 77 is the first fine textured hybrid Couchgrass (otherwise known as Bermudagrass) to be available in seeded form!
Used on golf courses all across Australia, Princess 77 is the king of all Bermuda grasses. Its popularity is due to its thicker density and turf like appearance, while still being a far cheaper option than turf.
It has the ability to be mowed very short, offering superior ball control for golf courses, cricket wickets and bowing greens. Princess 77 is popular for residential use for those who desire a premium lawn.
Princess 77 is a warm season grass and will need a full day of sunlight to flourish, which is typically 8 hours. Princess 77 has a short dormancy period in the winter months and may discolor, particularly in sub-tropical climates.
Note: Princess 77 Couch can be oversown with Pencross Bentgrass or Poa Trivialis to improve winter performance and provide a lawn that is pristine all year round. This also works to protect the Couch from heavy traffic during dormancy.
Seeding rates:
New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter. (1kg/100m2)
Overseeding of existing lawn: 5 grams per square meter. (1kg/200m2)

Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed
McKay’s Compadre Zoysia seed is perhaps our most high-quality and popular grass seed at McKay’s. It is an improved variety of Zoysia that provides a beautiful lush cover, dark green leaf tone, medium leaf size, and enhanced density.
All Zoysia grass varieties are spread by surface stolons and underground rhizomes. The presence of rhizomes also increases the hardiness of the variety, for winter survival or drought tolerance.
Compadre Zoysia is drought, heat, and salt tolerant. It also stands up well under heavy wear and tears. It is recommended for shaded areas in Northern Australia but will always prefer being in a more sunny position.
Compadre Zoysia is a warm-season Asian grass type and does not tolerate cold weather very well. This means its active growth starts in early or late spring, depending on location and peaks in the hot summer months. It should only be planted in the warmer regions of Australia where other warm-season lawns are grown, such as Buffalo and Couch. It is not recommended for Victoria or Tasmania as it does not perform well in frost.
Seeding rates:
New Lawns: 15 grams per square meter (1.5 kg/100m2).
Overseeding: 8 grams per square meter (approx 1.5kg/200m2).

Queensland Blue Couch Seed
Queensland Blue Couch is a very popular choice for homeowners in the warmer parts of Australia. It is known for its low-growing lush coverage, which provides a soft, weed-resistant lawn.
Queensland Blue Couch is a warm-season grass suited only to the warmer regions of the country. It is a very soft, deep blue-green, fine-textured grass that has good drought tolerance once its roots have grown deeper. It also does not thatch up like many other warm-climate types of grass.
It has a similar appearance to a genuine Couch grass, but with a wider leaf blade that tapers into a pointy tip. It has an attractive blue-green color which can turn slightly purple in the Queensland Winter.
Seeding rates:
- New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter (2kgs/100m2).

Bermuda Couch Grass Seed
Bermuda Couch is a warm-season grass that is ideal for the Australian climate.
A favorite of Australian golf courses and suburban lawns alike, Couch is extremely hardy. The grass has an extensive root system, giving it the best chance of surviving tough drought conditions.
Bermuda Couch has runners that spread both above ground (called stolons) and below ground (rhizomes). This makes the grass great at “self-repairing”, and any bare patches that you may have from your initial sowing of seed will, more often than not, be quickly filled in without any need for a second sow.
Minimal expertise is required to manage and maintain a Couch lawn, and the ongoing management cost is low.
Bermuda Couch grasses become dormant in winter and may discolor, particularly in sub-tropical climates. Note: A Couch surface can be oversown with a Perennial Ryegrass to improve winter performance. This also works to protect the Couch from heavy traffic during dormancy.
Seeding rates:
- New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter (1kg/100m2)
- Overseeding: 5 grams per square meter (1kg/200m2)
Please note: Seed may be coated for protection and to enhance germination. Batches may vary.

Carpet Grass Seed
Carpet grass is a broad leaf, warm season, perennial grass that is about as low maintenance as they come. The name comes from the fact that it is a particularly thick and low growing variety that spreads by its creeping stolons. The sod is very dense and feels firm underfoot.
It is particularly suited to areas prone to low fertility, acidic or poor soils, as it has an ability to withstand very tough conditions and spread out through its creeping growth pattern. It is also a good choice for erosion control as it thrives in areas where other grasses fail, such as in difficult terrains and areas that are not regularly maintained. The minimal upkeep required by Carpet Grass makes it a favorite of not only Australian backyards, but of roadsides and commercial landscapes.
While technically a warm season grass, Carpet Grass can be grown in nearly all of Australia (with the exception of particularly cold regions, such as Tasmania, Canberra and Victoria). It is the number one choice for Tropical climates. Despite the preference for warmer areas, it’s still able to withstand up to 50% shade without being adversely affected.
If you live in FNQ, NT or Darwin you should definitely consider Carpet Grass for your next lawn.
