Buffalo Lawn Seed Blend

The McKays Buffalo Blend contains one of the very few drought-tolerant North American Buffalo grasses suitable for lawn use. It is also the only Buffalo variety available in seed in Australia.

Buffalo grass is a warm season grass, thriving in the warmer climates of Australia. Once established it has a very fine, medium-dark green leaf that is very soft to walk on. This is a different look to the broad leaf turf type varieties.

McKays Buffalo Blend is an excellent summer active lawn, greenest during the hottest months of the Summer. Working in combination with the Perennial Ryegrass in this blend, it has good shade, drought and frost tolerance. Being a runner variety of grass, Buffalo is also highly durable, possessing the ability to self repair from heavy use and damage.

Buffalo lawns remain dormant longer than other warm season grasses in the Winter and will brown off with the first frost. The Perennial Ryegrass in this mix becomes active in the cooler temperatures to provide both protection for the Buffalo during dormancy and a green Winter lawn.

The Buffalo Blend is a great, affordable option for establishing a magnificent Buffalo lawn from scratch. Our Buffalo Blend is an excellent choice for anyone looking to create a lush patch of Buffalo heaven. You can have a thriving Buffalo lawn in a matter of weeks for a fraction of the cost of turf and we have 100’s of happy customers to prove it!

Kikuyu Grass Seed Blend

Kikuyu is a warm season grass that is hardy, self repairing and drought tolerant. It has a soft, bright green leaf and when mowed regularly makes a beautiful lawn that requires minimal lawn care to remain healthy.

Kikuyu seed is quick to propagate and grows rapidly. Kikuyu has always been the number one choice for any lawn areas which are expected to be under high traffic conditions, including trampling by cattle and vehicles, as this grass repairs itself quicker than almost any other grass.

As Kikuyu is a warm season grass the active growing phase is during the warmer months in Spring and Summer. Kikuyu becomes dormant in Winter, however unlike most Kikuyu varieties, our seed will not go yellow after one frost in the winter. It will eventually go yellow after multiple frosts, however it has been shown to be resistant to colder weather in the winter. Kikuyu will return to its green color when the warmer weather returns.

In this blend, the large percentage of Annual Ryegrass provides a safety bed to protect and nurture the growth of Kikuyu. The Annual Ryegrass will eventually die off after 12 months (usually due to warmer weather) allowing the Kikuyu’s aggressive runners to take over and fill out the other areas leaving you with a pure Kikuyu lawn.

Bermuda Couch Grass Seed Blend

McKays Bermuda Couch Blend is a combination of Bermuda Couch (also known as Sahara Couch grass), Annual Ryegrass and McKays Slow Release Fertiliser.

The purpose of the Annual Ryegrass in this blend is to provide a safety bed which protects and nurtures the growth of the Bermuda Couch grass for the first year of growth (approximately). The Annual Ryegrass will die off after this time (usually in the warmer weather) and will not return, allowing the Bermuda Couch’s aggressive runners to take over and fill out any bare or thin areas. This is particularly useful if seeding large areas or in the temperate climates of Australia.

If you are living in parts of Australia where the temperature regularly exceeds 25 degrees, we recommend going with the Bermuda Couch Grass Seed as the Annual Rye in this Bermuda Couch Grass Seed Blend will not survive long in these temperatures.

Queensland Blue Couch Seed Blend

Queensland Blue Couch is a very popular choice for home-owners in the warmer parts of Australia. It is known for its low growing lush coverage, which provides a soft, weed resistant lawn.

Queensland Blue Couch is a warm season grass suited only to the warmer regions of the country.  It is a very soft, deep blue-green, fine textured grass that has good drought tolerance once its roots have grown deeply. It also does not thatch up like many other warm climate grasses.

It has a similar appearance to a genuine Couch grass, but with a wider leaf blade which tapers into a pointy tip. It has an attractive blue green colour which can turn slightly purple in the Queensland Winter.

In this blend, the Annual Ryegrass provides a safety bed which protects and nurtures the growth of the Queensland Blue. The Annual Ryegrass will eventually die off after 12 months (usually due to warmer weather) and will not return, allowing the Queensland Blue’s runners to take over and fill out the other areas.

For best results, plant in a climate that ranges between 18-25 degrees Celsius, and fertilize a couple times a year with McKay’s Slow Release Fertiliser.

If you are living in parts of Australia where the temperature regularly exceeds 25 degrees, we recommend going with the Pure Queensland Blue Couch Seed as the Annual Rye will not survive long in temperatures over 30 degrees.

Princess 77 Couch Seed

Princess 77 Couch Seed

Princess 77 is the first fine textured hybrid Couchgrass (otherwise known as Bermudagrass) to be available in seeded form!

Used on golf courses all across Australia, Princess 77 is the king of all Bermuda grasses. Its popularity is due to its thicker density and turf like appearance, while still being a far cheaper option than turf.

It has the ability to be mowed very short, offering superior ball control for golf courses, cricket wickets and bowing greens. Princess 77 is popular for residential use for those who desire a premium lawn.

Princess 77 is a warm season grass and will need a full day of sunlight to flourish, which is typically 8 hours. Princess 77 has a short dormancy period in the winter months and may discolor, particularly in sub-tropical climates.

Note: Princess 77 Couch can be oversown with Pencross Bentgrass or Poa Trivialis to improve winter performance and provide a lawn that is pristine all year round. This also works to protect the Couch from heavy traffic during dormancy.

Seeding rates:

New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter. (1kg/100m2)

Overseeding of existing lawn: 5 grams per square meter. (1kg/200m2)

Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed

Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed

McKay’s Compadre Zoysia seed is perhaps our most high-quality and popular grass seed at McKay’s. It is an improved variety of Zoysia that provides a beautiful lush cover, dark green leaf tone, medium leaf size, and enhanced density.

All Zoysia grass varieties are spread by surface stolons and underground rhizomes. The presence of rhizomes also increases the hardiness of the variety, for winter survival or drought tolerance.

Compadre Zoysia is drought, heat, and salt tolerant. It also stands up well under heavy wear and tears. It is recommended for shaded areas in Northern Australia but will always prefer being in a more sunny position.

Compadre Zoysia is a warm-season Asian grass type and does not tolerate cold weather very well. This means its active growth starts in early or late spring, depending on location and peaks in the hot summer months. It should only be planted in the warmer regions of Australia where other warm-season lawns are grown, such as Buffalo and Couch. It is not recommended for Victoria or Tasmania as it does not perform well in frost.

Seeding rates:

New Lawns: 15 grams per square meter (1.5 kg/100m2).

Overseeding: 8 grams per square meter (approx 1.5kg/200m2).

Bermuda Couch Grass Seed

Bermuda Couch Grass Seed

Bermuda Couch is a warm-season grass that is ideal for the Australian climate.

A favorite of Australian golf courses and suburban lawns alike,  Couch is extremely hardy.  The grass has an extensive root system, giving it the best chance of surviving tough drought conditions.

Bermuda Couch has runners that spread both above ground (called stolons) and below ground (rhizomes). This makes the grass great at “self-repairing”, and any bare patches that you may have from your initial sowing of seed will, more often than not, be quickly filled in without any need for a second sow.

Minimal expertise is required to manage and maintain a Couch lawn, and the ongoing management cost is low.

Bermuda Couch grasses become dormant in winter and may discolor, particularly in sub-tropical climates. Note: A Couch surface can be oversown with a Perennial Ryegrass to improve winter performance. This also works to protect the Couch from heavy traffic during dormancy.

Seeding rates:

  • New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter (1kg/100m2)
  • Overseeding: 5 grams per square meter (1kg/200m2)

Carpet Grass Seed

Carpet Grass Seed

Carpet grass is a broad leaf, warm season, perennial grass that is about as low maintenance as they come. The name comes from the fact that it is a particularly thick and low growing variety that spreads by its creeping stolons. The sod is very dense and feels firm underfoot.

It is particularly suited to areas prone to low fertility, acidic or poor soils, as it has an ability to withstand very tough conditions and spread out through its creeping growth pattern. It is also a good choice for erosion control as it thrives in areas where other grasses fail, such as in difficult terrains and areas that are not regularly maintained. The minimal upkeep required by Carpet Grass makes it a favorite of not only Australian backyards, but of roadsides and commercial landscapes.

While technically a warm season grass, Carpet Grass can be grown in nearly all of Australia (with the exception of particularly cold regions, such as Tasmania, Canberra and Victoria). It is the number one choice for Tropical climates. Despite the preference for warmer areas, it’s still able to withstand up to 50% shade without being adversely affected.

If you live in FNQ, NT or Darwin you should definitely consider Carpet Grass for your next lawn.

Seeding rates:

  • New Lawns: 20 grams per square meter (2kg/100m2).
  • Overseeding: 10 grams per square meter (1kg/100m2).

Seashore Paspalum

Seashore Paspalum

Seashore Paspalum is a premium warm season perennial grass which displays a prostrate growth habit that forms a moderately dense but uniform sward.
It thrives in warm to hot climates, produces a deep rooting system and has aggressive stolon and rhizome activity.
Sea Spray suits a wide variety of turf situations which include golf tees, fairways, greens and roughs, parks, home lawns, recreational areas, erosion control and most coastal sites that are influenced by salt.
This wide range of use is due to the grass plant’s tolerance of most soil types, its ability to withstand pH levels between 4.5 – 9.0 and its unique ability to withstand soils or irrigation water with salt contents up to 34,000ppm NaCI, this also makes Seashore Paspalum the perfect choice for surfaces watered with recycled or bore water.
Seashore Paspalum performs well in reduced light situations such as rainy, cloudy, foggy, or in smoggy environments, its tolerance to shade is better than that of most bermudagrasses.
Seashore Paspalum has a tolerance to cold weather which is similar to most Couch or Bermudagrasses, displaying good winter colour in mild climates.
Seashore Paspalum is well suited to areas at sea level. Its ability to withstand short term inundation means that it’s a perfect choice for locations with a low water table or in tidal situations.

Seeding rates:

  • New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter (1 kg/100m2).
  • Overseeding: 5 grams per square meter (1kg/200m2).
