Detailed Description

The Parks Blend is a versatile and resilient grass seed mix, combining Turf Type Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass to create a lush, green lawn that thrives in various conditions. Known for its excellent shade tolerance and ability to withstand foot traffic, Parks Blend is ideal for residential lawns, commercial landscapes, parks, and playgrounds. Its adaptability to different climates makes it a preferred choice for temperate regions across Australia.

Sowing Tips

Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure best coverage and avoid seed wastage, we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. Soil must remain damp throughout the germination period and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing through irrigation or natural rainfall. Adequate water supplies need to be maintained until the grass is fully established.

Optimal Planting Time

The optimum temperature for Parks Blend is in the range of 15ºC to 28ºC.

Germination Expectations

10-21 days (climate dependent). Due to the slower growth of Kentucky Bluegrass, full establishment can take 1-2 months. However, once established, it spreads quickly via its extensive rhizome production.

Water

Parks Blend loves water and will need a good, reliable water supply to ensure optimal performance, particularly in warmer weather. It has higher water requirements than many other grasses. Watering should be deep and less frequent to encourage the roots to deepen in search of moisture. This will produce a more drought-tolerant and disease-resistant turf.

Please Note: This grass will need significant watering during Summer and on unseasonably hot days. It may burn and die off during very hot temperatures when not watered adequately. We recommend the use of Restore Granular Wetter to assist in protecting the root system through the hotter months and for best performance throughout the year.

Fertilizing

Fertilising with Slow Release Fertiliser is recommended with seeding and again 8 weeks post germination to establish the root system. This fertiliser can be applied at the time of seeding and on newly established shoots, however ensure fertiliser is watered in well to avoid fertiliser burn.

Careful attention will need to be paid to fertilise the new lawn frequently during its first year; 3-4 times is recommended in the growing season.

First Mowing

Once the grass is 5cm tall or greater the Parks Blend can be mowed. Lawn mowing heights will need to be kept above 4cm for residential use. Recommended mowing height is approximately 40-70 mm.

Mowing Frequency

During its peak cool season environment, lawn mowing will need to be carried out around once a week to ensure the lawn doesn’t suffer from having too much green leaf removed in a single mowing.

It must be remembered by homeowners using Parks Blend in shaded areas that lawn mowing heights may need to be increased for these areas. The longer green leaf blade is necessary for the lawn to power more photosynthesis under diminished light levels.

Disadvantages of Parks Blend

  • At temperatures greater than 30ºC and in freezing temperatures, it will go into dormancy but will recover when the preferred temperature returns.
  • Any areas of turf that are becoming worn out or sparse should be re-seeded whenever necessary.

Better than Bunnings Seeds
I'm in Tasmanian and in the process of repairing a large neglected lawn. My observation with seed from Bunnings was that, regardless of what's on the box, it's almost all perenial ryegrass, and the quality of lots varies ie with identical soil preparation and watering germination rates varied widely. Once this ryegrass had germinated two facts were apparent - ryegrass is not very drought tolerant and its ligher green color is not a good match with the existing grass which is (now I know more) a mix of Kentucky Blue Grass and Tall Fescue, McKays Parks Blend to the rescue. Using a 4 day pre-germination (seeds in bag in a bucket of water, with water changed every 12 hours) the sow mixed with some fertilizer, loam and coarse sand, the first sprouts appeared within a week and with a very even distribution. Delivery was quick too.
