Bentgrass (Penncross) Seed

(54 Reviews)

Penncross Bentgrass is renowned for its beauty, featuring a tight, upright growth and fine leaf texture. Its deep bluish-green color and thick density make it a luxury cool-season grass, perfect for creating a velvety turf.

Creeping Bentgrasses spread through long stems, with nodes that root easily, forming the famous thick, velvety turf. It pairs well with Princess 77 Couch for a pristine, manicured golf course-like lawn.

Ideal for temperate Australian climates such as Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and New South Wales, Penncross Bentgrass is not recommended for far northern areas where temperatures consistently reach 35 degrees.

Seeding Rates

  • New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter (1kg/100m2).
  • Overseeding: 5 grams per square meter (1kg/200m2).

Detailed Description

Penncross Bentgrass is a super thin-bladed, very dense grass, resembling carpet, making it perfect for golf and bowling greens. Its aggressive growth pattern contributes to its high traffic tolerance.

Sowing Tips

Plant ensuring good seed-to-soil contact but no deeper than 0.7cm.

Optimal Planting Time

The best time to sow is when the temperature is consistently close to 18 degrees.

Germination

Germination will take place in 7 – 15 days, depending on soil temperatures. Limited use of the area can be expected in 6 weeks.

Water

Keep seedlings moist until well-rooted. Penncross performs best on sandy soil and tolerates clay soils with adequate drainage. Bentgrasses do not perform well in wet areas; however, Penncross can tolerate saturated soil conditions for short periods.

Fertilising

Penncross performs best in soils with a pH of 5.5 to 8. It has a moderate annual Nitrogen requirement.

First Mowing

The first mowing may be expected within 30 days, or when the plants have sufficiently rooted.

Mowing Frequency

Penncross’s optimum mowing height is 4.8mm to 8mm, but can be adjusted higher or lower depending upon maintenance practices and intended use. Increased mowing requirements during the active growth phase are expected.

Disadvantages of Penncross

  • Penncross requires moderate to high maintenance.
  • Penncross can be used for residential lawns but homeowners should investigate the care required for this grass, along with the soil, air, and drainage requirements needed to make this grass grow before planting.

Bentgrass it’s magical!
Drop seeded, average day temps low to mid 20’s. Surprised me to see germination on day 4! Getting ready for first cut at 18mm on day 18 as some sections are 25 to 35mm in height. Very happy!

RESTORE BENT PENNCROSS LAWN
On 3/01/2024 I took photos of my front lawn that I seeded in late September 2023 with McKays Bent Penncross seed. The result was stunning. The second photo was taken in autumn 2024 and shows the effects of the summer heat (Lithgow is in a cool climate region) plus the effects of the extensive root suckers of 2 council Mop Top trees (Arcacia). Despite regular watering the competition for water partly deprived the lawn leaving as shown in the second photo. The Mop Top trees have since been removed. Lastly, I think some over-fertilising may have partly contributed to the deterioration of the lawn. I am now planning to reseed my front lawn to restore it to its former beauty. The lawn is 220m² and I intend using 1kg Bent Penncross seed mixed with a 1.25kg of fertilizer containing approx. Nitrogen 16%, Phosphate 0.7% , Potassium 4.0% and Sulphur 2.0%. I will be using a Chapin spreader. The only future problems that I can see is that Council intends to replace the Mop Top trees in spring 2024 with Lagerstroemia Crepe Myrtle trees. These trees have a densely matted root system spreading out to three times the size of the crown of the trees. They also compete severely with lawns for water. Therefore I could end up with the same problem of dead lawn that I am experiencing now. Do you have any suggestions to help me in my lawn restoration.

Bentgrass (Pencross) Seed for DIY Putting Green
Sowed seed at 1kg per 100sqm, together with a lawn starter fertiliser, after about 8 days it germinated, now after 8 weeks of Yarra Ranges spring weather, the grass has really thickened out, forming a springy mat underneath. First time I have ever sown a lawn, I followed your 7 steps guide and am very happy with the results to date.

Shouldn’t be long now before I spread the seed a# I know time is running out however with this weather who knows as I didn’t do it earlier because I didn’t want it washed away with all our rain. Regards, Ray.
