Frost Tolerant

Frost-tolerant means the grass survives winter and bounces back, not that it keeps growing fast through it. Every variety here slows right down in the cold months and may lose some colour. That’s normal cool-season behaviour, not a failed lawn.

This page is dominated by cool-season grasses, the natural fit for regions with a real winter, such as Victoria, the NSW tablelands or the SA hills. RTF Tall Fescue and the Elite Backyard Blend are the hardest-wearing all-rounders for a cold-climate backyard. RPR Perennial Ryegrass and Sports Turf Perennial Ryegrass establish fast and handle traffic well, useful where a lawn also needs to cope with kids or pets. Bentgrass (Penncross) is a different case: it’s a fine, frost-tolerant turf built for golf and bowling greens, not a general home lawn, and it needs very low, frequent mowing to perform. Annual Ryegrass is a fast, cheap option for temporary winter cover or overseeding rather than a permanent lawn.

Before you buy:

Growth slows and colour dulls over winter regardless of variety, that’s expected
Cool-season grasses are the right fit for regions with a genuine cold winter
Bentgrass (Penncross) is a specialist greens turf, not a practical home lawn choice
Annual Ryegrass suits temporary cover or overseeding, not a permanent lawn
