Annual ryegrass pasture seed is one of the most productive of all grasses but is a one year proposition. It has rapid germination, an aggressive growth habit, and high production levels during autumn, winter and early spring seasons. The forage quality drops in late spring with the onset of seed head emergence, and plants are usually dead by summer.

Annual ryegrasses are a good option for over-sowing and improving existing pastures. It is a great companion grass for oats, winter rye, clovers, any grassing seed, farm crop, vegetable fields, berry producers, wineries, orchard – any place adapted for annual ryegrass can benefit in some manner in planting ryegrass.

With high feed value in terms of energy and protein it is ideally suited to intensive grazing, green manure and hay or silage production.

Excellent temporary ground cover

I’m using this as a winter groundcover for some new landscaping, to be replaced with Bermuda later in the year when it dies off. I did not irrigate, it was left to natural rainfall and it has grown thick and lush and about 200mm long in the 4 weeks since it was sown. There’s no chance of any weeds getting through now and it’s no longer muddy to walk around on. So for this purpose, it’s perfect.
