Detailed Description

Strawberry Clover, or Trifolium Fragiferum, is a legume native to Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. Known for its characteristic three-leaflet form, this clover is ideal for those seeking a vibrant addition to their garden or pasture.

Strawberry Clover is the most salt-tolerant clover, making it suitable for saline and alkaline soils. It develops a dense sod, providing nutritious forage for animals and attracting beneficial insects like birds, butterflies, and bees. By planting Strawberry Clover, you support a complete and healthy ecosystem on your land.

Optimal pH

Clovers tolerate acidic soils, but Strawberry Clover prefers neutral to alkaline soils with a pH between 6.0 – 8.0.

Sowing Tips

Ideally, sow seed into soft topsoil or sandy loam. Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure best coverage and avoid seed wastage, we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. Soil must remain damp throughout the germination period and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing through irrigation or natural rainfall.

Optimal Planting Time

Mid-Autumn to early Winter in moist conditions. If irrigated, can be planted in Spring.

Germination

7-14 days, climate and condition dependent.

Water

Strawberry Clover has good heat tolerance but needs moisture. It is slightly more drought tolerant than White Clover. It does not tolerate drought conditions well and needs summer rain or irrigation to thrive. It also has the ability to tolerate some waterlogging.

Fertilising

While it will grow more successfully in infertile conditions than other plants, it will not grow without a decent level of Phosphorus in the soil. This can be addressed by using McKays Slow Release Fertiliser.

First Mowing

Once roots are established enough to withstand the mowing process.

Mowing Frequency

Strawberry Clover can tolerate close mowing and grazing.

Disadvantages of Strawberry Clover

  • Bred for cool climates, it won’t do well in subtropics and tropics.
  • Requires irrigation in extended dry periods and tends to wilt in heat.
  • Inability to repair itself quickly; takes time to recover in high traffic areas.
