RPR Perennial Ryegrass Seed

This unique, fast germinating, cool climate Regenerating Perennial Ryegrass (RPR™) outperforms all other Ryegrass. The deep green color and a professional-like turf quality offer remarkable results.

It not only offers unparalleled quality under hard use and traffic, but it thrives in tough conditions.  RPR™ regenerates through its creeping growth habit and was designed to develop its own pseudo-stolons (creeping stems) which gives it a regenerative quality that will amaze you.

While it can certainly be used as a standalone variety, the benefits of Perennial Ryegrass really come to the fore when used as a companion grass to other varieties. By combining more than one grass seed in a mix when planting, your lawn can adapt to harsher and more varied conditions. Whether it be surviving heavy shade or direct sun, dry spells or heavy rain, combining two or more seeds with different strengths will counteract out the weaknesses of the varieties.

Active families, larger family pets, and backyard play areas all take their toll on traditional lawns. RPR provides the traffic tolerance, resiliency, and density needed for these demanding situations. If you are looking for a hardy, drought and frost tolerant Perennial Ryegrass that has a turf quality and can still grow under heavy use, then Regenerating Perennial Ryegrass (RPR™ ) is what you are looking for.

Seeding rates:

  • New Lawns: 30 grams per square meter (3kg/100m2)
  • Overseeding: 20 grams per square meter (2kg/100m2)

Please note: There are currently quarantine restrictions for seeds being sent to TAS and WA.  RPR Ryegrass is unable to be sent to TAS and WA due to quarantine restrictions.

Tasmanian customers: An alternative option for TAS is Sports Turf Ryegrass.  When placing an online order, please document ‘ATT: TAS Biosecurity’ in the ‘Company’ section above the address line to enable faster processing of your seed through quarantine.

WA customers:  Please contact McKays Seeds through the Contact Us link or via phone to discuss your options. Quarantine fees apply for seed inspection.

Description

RPR™ has a beautiful deep green color and easily withstands high use and abuse. A low maintenance lawn that is extremely disease and insect resistant, it thrives in harsh conditions due to its ability to regenerate using pseudo-stolons.

The combination of fast establishment and regenerative growth potential provides significantly improved weed control over other Ryegrasses.

Optimal pH: 5.0-7.0

Sowing Tips: For best results, sow in a soft, loamy soil that has good water retention. Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure best coverage and avoid seed wastage we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. Soil must remain damp throughout the germination period of both seeds and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing, through irrigation or natural rainfall.

Optimal Planting Time:  If there is sufficient soil moisture, RPR™ will grow at most times of the year in the temperate regions in southern Australia. Perennial Ryegrass traditionally performs best in areas with cooler temperatures and milder summers.

Germination: Under ideal conditions, germination may begin within 7-10 days (climate and season dependent).

Water: Keep moist until the roots are well established. When compared with other perennial ryegrasses, RPR™ exhibits superior drought tolerance. The key to drought tolerance is a well established root system prior to the onset of summer heat. Perennial Ryegrass has a higher water requirement in weather in excess of 28 degrees or when planted in full sun.

Fertilising:  Perennial Ryegrass also requires regular fertilisation. Ideally a bi-monthly spread of a high quality fertiliser such as McKays Slow Release Fertiliser, should be applied for optimal performance during the growing season.

First Mowing: It is a fast grower, and will need to be regularly mowed over the fast growing period of spring/early summer. Aim for the blade length to be within the 6 to 12cm range. However, RPR™ can be cut to shorter heights due to the increased density of this variety and ability to regenerate and recover from wear.

Mowing Frequency: 1-2 times/week during active growth.

Disadvantages of RPR™:

  • Perennial Ryegrass is at its best in the cooler months and peaks in growth at these times. It can start to struggle during warmer months, and does get particularly thirsty through spring and summer. A heavy watering schedule over these months is advised to keep your lawn looking healthy.
  • It can struggle in direct sun during summer months

Seed & package details: 100% Regenerating Perennial Ryegrass.

Beautiful lawn

Seeded 10th January and started to germinate at day 5 and the photos attached were taken just after its first mow 3 weeks after seeding.
Being summer in Canberra the daytime temps were between 22 and 32 with overnight lows around 14 degrees and that's why I think it germinated and grew so fast.
Good quality seed and reasonably fast shipping (received seeds about a week after placing order)

This seed wants to grow

It's been about six weeks since I started growing this as a starter seed as well as overseeding some green couch. It did take 7-10 days to see some new shoots as my watering was sporadic but once they take off they really thicken up. I actually thought there were some weeds as the growth rate and shoots were so thick and tall. It's also a great way to transition to a flat spreading couch to tall lush grass for the cooler months.

Outstanding germination

Germination was over 90% without even raking or covering with topsoil. Just watered the seeds into loose dirt and ran the sprinklers every morning. Pictures are 3 weeks apart.
