Known for its hardiness and aggressive runners- Kikuyu is a popular choice for home-owners, sporting fields and larger areas like airports.  The best time for sowing is late spring, to late summer, as long as your temperature is within the optimum temperatures of 18-29°C, you can expect germination. In this blend, the Annual ryegrass provides a safety bed- which protects and nurtures the growth of Kikuyu. The annual ryegrass will eventually die off after 12 months (usually due to warmer weather) allowing the Kikuyu’s aggressive runners to take over and fill out the other areas. Unlike most Kikuyu, our seed will not go yellow after one frost in the winter. It will eventually go yellow after multiple frosts, however it has been shown to be resistant to colder weather in the winter.

SO FAR SO GOOD 7 weeks in after seeding in the heat of the summer. We have a nice lush cover. Mostly the rye but the Kikuyu is starting to take hold nicely. Germination was quicker than expected (6 days) but had access to plenty of water (and warmth!)

GOOD SIGNS Good germination of the rye, which is lush and thick after about 8 weeks. The kikuyu is a little slower, as we expected, so final judgement reserved until we see that coming through properly.
