Dichondra Repens

Key Features:

Dichondra repens is an Australian native broadleaf herb that is an attractive and useful warm season perennial ground cover or lawn substitute that will grow readily in most climates.

It has a dense turf like thatch of glossy, deep green, small lilypad shaped leaves, stems that grows between 2 – 100mm in height and is soft underfoot.

It is often used as a living mulch or for planting under trees or other shaded areas where it may be difficult to establish grass. May also be used to plant
between pavers or garden steps due to its low maintenance requirements and light traffic tolerance.

It is a hardy, naturally compact ground cover which grows best in summer and can look thin and brown in winter. It grows well in full sun but is also suitable in areas of part shade. It is frost tolerant once established and hardy in most conditions. It generally requires little water once established but is only moderately drought hardy, so it requires regular irrigation over drought periods and Summer months.

Sowing Rate:

  • 10g/m2
  • 100g/10m2

Dichondra seeds can be sown even denser than the rates outlined above, however this is only necessary if you require quicker coverage.

Description

Sowing Tips: It is not suitable for planting on sand, but prefers a loam or heavier soil. Sow seed at 10 g/m2 in a soft, well drained soil mix and very lightly rake to avoid burying the seed. Apply a Slow Release Starter Fertiliser before sowing. Ideally follow up by rolling to press the seed firmly into the surface.

Optimal Planting Time: Seed is best sown from September to December when daytime temperatures are above 20 degrees and night temperatures above 10 degrees. Summer sowing is possible with careful irrigation.

Germination: Seedlings emerge after 7-14 days in temperatures above 20 degrees

Weed Control: Dichondra is slow growing so weeds can compete with it. Use only herbicides labelled for use in dichondra for weed control. Do not use regular grass lawn herbicides. Hand weeding of broadleaf weeds is the most effective control. Pre and post emergence grass herbicides can be used.

Water: Lightly irrigate several times per day until emergence. Once emerged reduce the irrigation frequency to every second day, then twice per week.

Fertilising: Lawn fertiliser promotes disease in Dichondra Repens so keep fertiliser inputs low. For best appearance use a methylene urea in October, December and February. Organic fertilisers and other controlled release nitrogen fertilisers with a low burn potential can also be used.

Mowing: Requires infrequent mowing or no mowing at all. Care needs to be taken not to mow too low and remove too much foliage. Un-mowed it grows to 100-200 mm.

Seed & package details: 100% Dichondra seeds only. May be coated to assist germination. Batches may vary.

Incredible!

I had used Dichondra seeds from other company, barely had any results after 3 weeks!
But these seeds are incredible, it took 4 days to sprout and now after a week I can see leaves!
