Carpet Grass Seed

Key Features: Hardy | Tropical | Low maintenance

Carpet grass is a broad leaf, warm season, perennial grass that is about as low maintenance as they come. The name comes from the fact that it is a particularly thick and low growing variety that spreads by its creeping stolons. The sod is very dense and feels firm underfoot.

It is particularly suited to areas prone to low fertility, acidic or poor soils, as it has an ability to withstand very tough conditions and spread out through its creeping growth pattern. It is also a good choice for erosion control as it thrives in areas where other grasses fail, such as in difficult terrains and areas that are not regularly maintained. The minimal upkeep required by Carpet Grass makes it a favorite of not only Australian backyards, but of roadsides and commercial landscapes.

While technically a warm season grass, Carpet Grass can be grown in nearly all of Australia (with the exception of particularly cold regions, such as Tasmania, Canberra and Victoria). It is the number one choice for Tropical climates. Despite the preference for warmer areas, it’s still able to withstand up to 50% shade without being adversely affected.

If you live in FNQ, NT or Darwin you should definitely consider Carpet Grass for your next lawn.

Seeding rates:

  • New Lawns: 20 grams per square meter (2kg/100m2).
  • Overseeding: 10 grams per square meter (1kg/100m2).

Description

Carpet Grass is a dense, thick grass that has an aggressive, creeping growth pattern and is best suited to the tropical climates of Australia.

Optimal pH: Carpet Grass can tolerate acidic soils down to a pH of 4 and thrives between a pH of 5-6.

Sowing Tips: Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure best coverage and avoid seed wastage we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. Soil must remain damp throughout the germination period of both seeds and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing, through irrigation or natural rainfall. Post planting, use of a light roller may be advisable, to assist in the retention of soil moisture, and to ensure good contact between the seed and soil. Carpet Grass performs best in full sun to slight shade.

Optimal Planting Time: Late Spring to Autumn

Germination: Carpet Grass seeds develop relatively slowly, and germination can be expected within 14-28 days of sowing (climate and condition dependent).

Water: Carpet Grass seed should be watered quite frequently with light water applications to maintain soil moisture consistently until germination is complete. This will keep the seedlings from drying out as they sprout. Ensure regular watering for 6-8 weeks until established.

Carpet Grass is a very shallow rooted variety, with 90% of its roots penetrating only down 0-5cm into the topsoil. While it is a hardy breed, this lack of a deep root system that can reach underground water supplies does mean that its drought tolerance is considered low, and it will need to be nurtured in extended dry periods or if planted in a dry soil. Irrigation of Carpet Grass will be required on dry soils or during periods of drought.

Fertilising: Carpet Grass grows well in soils with low fertility, however will perform optimally if fertilised with McKays Slow Release Fertiliser at least once per year during the active growth phase.  Applying a lawn fertilizer will hasten establishment.

First Mowing: Once roots are established enough to withstand the mowing process.

Mowing Frequency: Carpet Grass sends up seed stalks that can give the lawn a weedy appearance. To prevent seed heads, mow every 5-7 days. If allowed to grow, the seed stalks are tough and hard to mow down.

Disadvantages of Carpet Grass:

  • It is not high-quality, premium lawn, but it thrives in difficult areas where other grasses fail.
  • It has a more sparse growth habit than most warm season grasses.
  • It is one of the first grasses to turn brown when temperatures become cool and it is the last variety to green up in Spring.

Seed & package details: 100% Carpet Grass Seed. Please note that Carpet Grass Seed is usually coated to improve germination and protect the seeds to ensure the highest quality grass establishment.

Independently Tested: 85% Min Germination, 98% purity. A seed testing certificate is available upon request.

Ideal Usage: Lawns, Commercial Landscapes, Nature Strips, Road sides.
