Bermuda Couch Grass Seed

Key Features: Sports | Drought Tolerant | Hardy

Bermuda Couch is a warm-season grass that is ideal for the Australian climate.

A favorite of Australian golf courses and suburban lawns alike,  Couch is extremely hardy.  The grass has an extensive root system, giving it the best chance of surviving tough drought conditions.

Bermuda Couch has runners that spread both above ground (called stolons) and below ground (rhizomes). This makes the grass great at “self-repairing”, and any bare patches that you may have from your initial sowing of seed will, more often than not, be quickly filled in without any need for a second sow.

Minimal expertise is required to manage and maintain a Couch lawn, and the ongoing management cost is low.

Bermuda Couch grasses become dormant in winter and may discolor, particularly in sub-tropical climates. Note: A Couch surface can be oversown with a Perennial Ryegrass to improve winter performance. This also works to protect the Couch from heavy traffic during dormancy.

Seeding rates:

  • New Lawns: 10 grams per square meter (1kg/100m2)
  • Overseeding: 5 grams per square meter (1kg/200m2)

Please note: Seed may be coated for protection and to enhance germination. Batches may vary.

Description

Bermuda Couch grass is tolerant to saline or poor quality irrigation water. It is also highly wear tolerant. It produces rhizomes and stolons which allow recovery from damage from below-ground and across the surface. It is a good choice where a low thatching type is required. It is a native grass to the African Savannah and India.

Optimal pH: Bermuda Couch performs best in soils with moderate acidity (pH 5.8-7.0), but tolerates more alkaline conditions.

Sowing Tips: For best results, sow in full sun in well-drained soft top soil or sandy loam. Broadcast the seed at, or very near, the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. To ensure best coverage and avoid seed wastage we recommend using an appropriate seed spreader for the size of your area. Soil must remain damp throughout the germination period of both seeds and must be maintained for at least 1-2 weeks after sowing, through irrigation or natural rainfall.

Optimal Planting Time: Spring to late Summer (if access to watering) with soil temperatures consistently above 18 degrees. Cooler climates should plant in Summer. For cooler regions or for seeding in Autumn, we also recommend McKays Couch Blend.

Germination: Under ideal conditions, germination may begin within 7-10 days (climate and season dependent). Allow 10-21 days for full germination. Full coverage may be attained in 4-6 weeks. More time may be needed for establishment if sowing early or late in the season.

Water: Keep moist until the roots are well established, water consumption after this time should be significantly reduced. Is moderately salt tolerant.

Fertilising:  Requires generous Nitrogen applications for optimum performance during the growing season. Fertiliser application is recommended approximately 6 weeks after sowing during the active growth phase.

First Mowing: When grass is 1/3 taller than the desired mowing height. Couch performs best at mowing heights of 13-38mm.

Mowing Frequency: 1-2 times/week during active growth and remove no more than 1/3 of the leaf per mowing.

Mowing Tips:

  • The lower you mow it, the more often you need to mow
  • In shady areas increase the mowing height of the grass
  • Mowing is the best form of weed control

Disadvantages of Couch grass:

  • Does not tolerate shade well.
  • As it is a warm climate grass it can lose its colour and become dormant over winter, particularly when exposed to frosts.
  • It may go into summer dormancy after a prolonged drought, but it survives with an intact surface that will green up rapidly whenever rain falls.

Seed & package details: 100% Couch. Please note: This seed may be coated with a product used to improve germination and protect the seed. Batches of coating may vary in color.

Independently tested: 99% Min Germination, 98% purity. A seed testing certificate is available upon request.

Ideal Usage: Residential Lawns, Tees, Fairways, Sporting Grounds, Airports, Commercial Landscapes.

Where can I sow this grass in Australia? Australia wide.

Shade Tolerance: Poor

Daily Sunlight Required: 6+ hours

Drought Tolerance:  Excellent

Frost Tolerance: Poor

Traffic Tolerance: Excellent, self repairing

Amazing germination and growth

Bought Bermuda couch as a bit of a trial. Trial because it was late in the growing season so expectations were realistic. Planted about 50m2 on the 31st March, South of Brisbane, day time temps were 27-30 but overnight temps were 11-15C. Soil was bought in, very sandy loam, I added 1 bag composted cow manure per 10m2 to help prevent sand crusting. Kept it damp, first babies appeared at about 12 days. By 21 days it was all up, needed a mow just to clip the. tops. Very happy with the product and performance.

Looking hopeful now

Sowed side of house 14/12/22 back of house which is a very large area (800 sq m ) on 5/1/23. No rain so a lot of watering. Having a lot of trouble with birds eating the seed though and weeds filtering in from neighbours unkempt yards. Hence a lot of bare patches but hoping it will fill in. So far pretty happy compared to what we had

McKays Bermuda Couch Seed Produced a Fantastic Lawn

I strongly recommend McKays Bermuda Couch seed for a lawn. After a very wet 2022 summer in Queensland, my new lawn has matured wonderfully in Spring 2022.

Our lab's a very satisfied McKay's customer

Our lab suffered badly from skin allergies during Summer. His vet suggested it could be weeds in the lawn, so for the last two years I've weeded and prepped it carefully and sown McKay's seeds. There's been no recurrence of his allergies, and the longer grass is his absolute favourite spot.

Excellent seed, Excellent sales team!! 5 stars

I purchased couch grass seed, it came quickly and was packaged well. High germination rate. I had to cancel a different order, I ordered by mistake, quick to to respond and refund.

Customer care was best I’ve had, very helpful to identify a grass question I had and she gave me her time, well worth using this company. And I will buy from them again based on their customer care. I’ve had issues with other companies an not even a reply. This is great and refreshing to have a Bussiness who cares and wants to help! Thank you again for your time!
