It’s generally not recommended. Kikuyu spreads very aggressively via runners and will usually outcompete Zoysia over time—especially through the warmer months when Kikuyu growth accelerates.

Even if both establish initially, the lawn often ends up patchy with mixed texture and colour. If you want a consistent look and predictable maintenance, choose one and commit to it.

Kikuyu is usually the best for high-traffic family lawns. It’s extremely durable and self-repairing, so it bounces back quickly from running, digging, and heavy play.

Zoysia is still tough once established, but it grows more slowly. It handles regular use well, but Kikuyu generally wins if your yard sees constant, heavy wear.

Zoysia typically requires less water once established. Its dense turf and efficient growth habit help reduce evaporation, and it performs well with deep, infrequent watering.

Kikuyu is drought tolerant too, but because it grows vigorously in warm weather, it often needs more water to stay lush and actively growing—especially in high-traffic areas.

Kikuyu prefers full sun and can thin out in low-light areas. For best results, give Kikuyu 5–6+ hours of direct sun.

Note: Neither grass will thrive in deep shade all day—if that’s your yard, consider a more shade-tolerant option.
