McKays Tropical Horse Pasture Blend is quick to germinate and is designed to withstand the stress of grazing, quickly re-growing in both the summer and winter months.
This premium seed blend will give you beautiful, flowing pastures and allows you to be secure in the knowledge that it is a high-quality grazing grass for your horses.
Seeding rate: 15kg/ha
Please note: Some seeds contained in this product may be coated to support and enhance germination. Batches may vary.
Description
This blend contains Katambora Rhodes grass and a range of other nutritious pasture grasses. This can also be mixed with Callide Rhodes Grass for climates that have higher rainfall and humidity or the Temperate Horse Pasture Blend and Clovers for those wishing to add additional varieties into their pasture area.
Sowing Tips: Sow at 15kg/ha. Please note: some seeds in this blend are coated to ensure rapid germination and to improve soil contact. There is no synthetic fertiliser in this mix.
Optimum Sowing Time: We recommend sowing between September and March, depending on the climate, and when there is more probability of receiving consecutive rain days. Sowing during cooler weather will result in delayed germination.
Germination:Â Approximately 7 days depending on climate, soil preparation and conditions. Full coverage is expected by 3 months. Root system can take 12 months to mature and fully establish.
Fertilising:Â Production levels decline without a vigorous legume or the use of fertiliser Nitrogen. McKays Tropical Horse Pasture Blend does not contain synthetic fertilisers.
Mowing: McKays Tropical Horse Pasture Blend is very tolerant to cutting or grazing. The stand should be maintained in a leafy condition by fairly regular cutting/slashing or grazing, as the feeding value declines rapidly with onset of flowering. However, too frequent cutting or grazing (approx every 14 days) leads to production losses and stand decline
Advantages of McKays Tropical Horse Pasture Blend
- Produces in both summer and winter – no need to use two different blends
- Does not contain Ryegrass
- Rapid germination in most warm climate conditions
- Gives large ground cover to save you time and money
Limitations of McKays Tropical Horse Pasture Blend
Ideally Rhodes grass should not be grazed in the first year until the plants and runners are well anchored. This may not occur until reliable rainfall in Autumn or the wet season. Please ensure you rest the plants to see how well they are anchored before grazing.
