McKay’s Compadre Zoysia is a high-quality, popular grass seed known for its lush cover, dark green leaf tone, and enhanced density. Spread by stolons and rhizomes, it offers excellent drought, heat, and salt tolerance and withstands heavy wear. Ideal for shaded areas in Northern Australia, it prefers sunny positions and thrives in warmer regions where other warm-season lawns are grown. Detailed Description
Compadre means ‘Companion’, and Zoysia Compadre has been developed for its suitability to grow well among other grass types in a companion setting. While it can be grown as a beautiful lawn on its own, Compadre Zoysia is specifically bred to blend with Tall Fescue to provide a year-round green lawn in regions where it may go dormant and brown off in winter.
The grass spreads by surface stolons and underground rhizomes, enhancing its hardiness for winter survival and drought tolerance. Compadre Zoysia is known for excellent drought, heat, and salt tolerance, and it stands up well under heavy wear.
A soil pH between 6.5 and 7.0 is optimum for growth. For best results, plant in warmer regions like Northern Australia, avoiding Victoria and Tasmania due to frost sensitivity.
Sowing Tips
Broadcast the seed at or very near the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. Zoysia grass seed needs light to germinate, so it should be at or very near the surface for best results. A planting depth of 5mm or shallower is ideal. Due to the small size of Zoysia lawn seeds, combine with sandy loam and use an appropriate seed spreader for even distribution.
Optimal Planting Time
Compadre Zoysia is a warm-season grass; sow when night temperatures are consistently above 18°C and day temperatures exceed 28°C. Allow 3 months for establishment before autumn or cooler weather. Best sown in warmer temperate and tropical zones of Australia.
Germination
Germination occurs 28 days to 6 weeks, depending on climate. In cooler climates or sub-optimal conditions, it can take up to 8 weeks. Optimal soil temperature is 18-25°C at a 5cm depth.
Water
Due to the seed’s proximity to the surface, frequent light watering is necessary until germination is complete. Once established, it tolerates low water and drought conditions well.
Fertilising
To ensure successful germination, apply a starter fertiliser when sowing your grass seed. For best results, use McKays Slow Release Lawn Fertiliser.
First Mowing
Mow when the grass reaches 5cm. Zoysia tolerates mowing heights of 1.5 – 3 inches.
Mowing Frequency
More frequent mowing increases turf density for all Zoysia varieties.
