Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed Blend
McKays Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed Blend features 20% Compadre Zoysia, known for its lush cover, dark green leaf tone, and enhanced density. This blend includes Annual Ryegrass to nurture the Zoysia, which eventually takes over as the Ryegrass dies off. Compadre Zoysia is drought, heat, and salt tolerant, standing up well to heavy wear and tear.
Ideal for shaded areas in Northern Australia, it prefers sunnier spots and is best planted in warmer regions. Avoid planting in Victoria or Tasmania due to frost sensitivity. For optimal growth, maintain temperatures between 22-26°C and fertilise with McKays Slow Release Fertiliser.

Detailed Description
Compadre means ‘Companion’, and Zoysia Compadre has been developed for its ability to grow well among other grass types in a companion setting. This blend is designed with Annual Ryegrass to protect and nurture the growth of the Zoysia. Compadre Zoysia offers excellent drought, heat, and salt tolerance, making it suitable for heavy wear and tear in warmer climates.
A soil pH between 6.5 and 7.0 is optimum for growth. For specific details of each grass, see individual seeds: Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed and Annual Ryegrass.
Sowing Tips
Broadcast the seed at or very near the soil surface and incorporate lightly with raking. Zoysia grass seed needs light to germinate, so it should be at or very near the surface for best results. A planting depth of 5mm or shallower is ideal. To ensure even coverage and avoid seed wastage, combine the seed with sandy loam and use an appropriate seed spreader.
Optimal Planting Time
Compadre Zoysia is a warm-season grass; sow when night temperatures are consistently above 18°C. Allow 3 months for establishment before autumn or cooler weather. Best sown in warmer temperate and tropical zones of Australia.
Germination
Germination takes 7-10 days for Annual Ryegrass and 28 days to 6 weeks for Zoysia, climate dependent. In cooler climates or sub-optimal conditions, it can take up to 8 weeks. Optimal soil temperature is 18-25°C at a 5cm depth.
Water
Due to the seed’s proximity to the surface, frequent light watering is necessary until germination is complete. Once established, it tolerates low water and drought conditions well.
Fertilising
Apply a starter fertiliser when sowing for successful germination. For optimal growth, fertilising during the active phase is recommended. Use McKays Slow Release Lawn Fertiliser for best results.
First Mowing
Mow when grass reaches 5cm in height.
Mowing Frequency
More frequent mowing increases turf density. Mowing is also an effective form of weed control.
Disadvantages of Compadre Zoysia Grass Seed Blend
- Requires more watering in warm weather due to the large Ryegrass component.
- Longer establishment time for a pure Compadre Zoysia lawn than using pure Zoysia seed.
- Poor cold and frost tolerance; recommended only for warmer climates.
- Not suitable for Tasmania or Victoria.
