Best Lawn Seed by State and Season

Australia does not have one lawn-sowing calendar. It has at least six, because a soil thermometer in Darwin and one in Hobart are never telling the same story on the same date. A couch grass sown in Brisbane in August can be up and running before a fescue sown in Ballarat has even started to think about it, and that gap is not marketing, it is basic soil temperature.

This hub is where we match the two variables that actually decide whether grass seed strikes: which state you are in, and which season it is. Warm-season species such as couch, kikuyu, buffalo and zoysia need sustained soil temperatures of roughly 18 to 20C or more before they will germinate reliably. Cool-season species such as fescue, ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass will get moving from about 10 to 12C. Match the species to the season your state is actually having, not the season on the calendar, and you will get a better strike rate.
